The Green Smoothie

Over the past two years, I have been dealing with some health issues. I wanted to make sure I was doing everything I could to help my body fight disease, so I knew I needed a change.

At first I didn’t want a radical approach; I just wanted to do better. Green Smoothie Girl was the jump start I needed. On her website, Robyn Openshaw provides inspiration and a process that you can use to change over time. In her 12 Steps to Whole Food, Openshaw outlines the simple steps you can take to make changes. Step 1: Green Smoothies! Those first smoothies were not easy to drink. Before I knew it, I was craving them! Here are some tips:

  • Start with lots of fruit and just a handful of greens (spinach is a good way to start). Over time, slowly transition to smoothies with more greens and less fruit.
  • If it still isn’t sweet enough, add a little agave. You can wean yourself from this once you acquire a taste for the smoothies.
  • I started by using a little water. I then switched to kefir until I decided to go vegan. (There is more to come on this decision.)
  • Consider adding a high power blender to your arsenal of kitchen tools. I got the Vitamix and absolutely love it!

The green smoothie was my first step towards this reboot. What’s your first step going to be?
