Double Blazes

White-paint blazes mark the AppalachianTrail (AT), and may be located on trees, rocks, or posts.

Double blazes, sometimes offset, signal an obscure turn, route change, or incoming side trail.
Last weekend, we decided to go for a hike. Part of the trail followed the AT so we saw the characteristic double blazes. As we walked along looking for the trail markers, I started to think about how nice it would be if we had the same clear signals when it was time to change course in our lives. Time to look for another job? Double blazes. Time to move? Double blazes. Instead it often feels like I go through life anticipating a sign that never really comes. Other times it seems like there must have been a sign that I missed, which caused me to walk on the same path far longer than I ever should have.

I always welcome the “no brainers”, the opportunities I just can’t pass up. In lieu of these clear markers, I have to trust my intellect and intuition. And I have to hope. Right now, I’m in a weird place because I don’t have a clear sense of what I want next.  Not knowing what to hope for is disconcerting for someone who has always been focused and driven. Now what? Instead of focusing on what I don’t know, I see this as an invitation from the universe to dream. I may not have a big juicy goal I’m working toward right now, but I do have the opportunity to re-imagine my future. What could be? If I allow myself to play with the possibilities, my path will become clear. I am hoping that the double blazes will appear.
